The CCNP Voice certification is global qualification from Cisco. An IT professional with a (CCNP) will have developed the skills to master the rapid changes in voice technology in the industry. There are a total of five exams required to become a CCNP certified individual and 642-437 is one of the five exams required. 642-437 focuses on the implementing of Cisco Voice Communications and QoS systems.
Why is this exam required?
Although a stand-alone exam the 642-437 is part of five exams needed to be completed to become a CCNP Voice certified professional. The course and exam teaches students about voice gateways, characteristics of VoIP call legs, dial plans and their implementation. Individuals who have verified skills and awareness of how to apply and activate gateways and gatekeepers, should take the exams a first step in overall CCNP Voice credentials.
To become a CCNP Voice certified professional, you will need to complete 5 exams of which 642-437, Implementing Cisco Voice Communications and QoS is one.

To begin CCNP certification a student will need to complete CCNA Voice, CCNA Video or any Cisco CCIE certification. One of these is needed as any prerequisite to being certification or taking the 642-437, Implementing Cisco Voice Communications and QoS exam.
Objectives of the exam:
The exam is divided into 8 topic areas each with variable weight ratio in the paper (shown in brackets below). Each area should be fully understood by the student as a stand-alone subject
- Define Dial Plans (13%)
Individuals need to provide detailed descriptions of numbering plans, digit manipulations, path selections and calling privileges within a dial plan.
- Define the operation basics and Components (VoIP Call) (16%)
Individuals need to provide descriptions of call flows (VoIP) including cRTP, RTP, ,sRTP, H.323, MGCP,SIP. Individuals will also be required to describe suitable gateway signaling protocol and the fitting codec in a range of given scenarios. Individuals will also be required to configure and define VLANs.
- Execute Unified Communications Manager (Cisco) Express to Provision Endpoints - CLI (11%)
Individuals need to describe configuration components for software required to provision endpoints including NTP, DHCP, & TFTP.
- Explain G gateway components (9%)
Individuals need to identity and describe the role of gateways, DSP functionality, class of voice ports, the call gateway process routing and dial peers
Individuals need to explain codec complexity and describe codecs.
- Execute a gGateway (13%)
Individuals need to explain the configuration of analog and voice ports (digital) and dial peers. Individuals also will need to explain how to configure manipulation for digits and calling privileges.
- Implement Unified Border (Cisco) Element (9%)
Individuals need to explain the unified border (Cisco) element features, functions and protocols. Individuals need to explain how to configure unified border (Cisco) elements, media interworking and admission control for calls.
- Execute Voice and Video using QoS (11%)
Individuals need to explain all potential factors that may be the cause of any voice and video related quality issues and describe ways to resolve voice and video quality issues. Individuals may need to describe QoS elements needed for voice and potential video traffic.
- Describe and construct the DiffServ Model for QoS (18%)
Individuals need to explain the DiffServ QoS model and pattern based on DSCP, CoS and IP Precedence. Individuals will need to identify boundaries for trust. Individuals will need to execute layers 2 and 3 of QoS mapping, and trust boundary present on Cisco switches plus ilow Latency queuing.
