The Microsoft 70-417 exam is an updated composition of three individual exams: Exam 70-410, exam 70-411, and exam 70-412. Each of these three exams has its own domains and topics Microsoft 70-417 is intended for Information Technology professionals who require validation of their skills and knowledge.

Exam Description:

Why is this exam required?

This exam is needed for an individual to receive the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) certifications. By completing this exam, the candidate’s ability to work with Windows Server 2012 is demonstrated.

Associated exam:

Besides the three individual exams this is composed of, the Microsoft 70-417 exam is related to the MSCSA: Windows Server 2012, MSCE: Server Infrastructure, and MCSE: Desktop Infrastructure certifications.


Before taking this exam, the candidate should have the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certifications, or any of the Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certifications. The MCITP pre-requisites include Virtualization Administrator on Windows Server 2008 R2, Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2010, Lync Server Administrator 2010, SharePoint Administrator 2010, and Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7.

Objectives of the exam:

Because this exam is three combined into one, it contains a large amount of domains each covering important topics that must be understood by the candidate. Each domain takes up a certain percentage of the corresponding exam. Below is a list of all three exams, their domains, percentages, and a brief summary of the topics covered.

Exam 70-410

- Install and Configure Servers (25-30%)

Candidates must plan and perform the installation of a server and upgrades, optimise resource utilisation, configure various server aspects and features, and install Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC). They must also configure local storage and design storage spaces.

- Configure Server Roles and Features (20-25%)

Candidates must be capable of configuring servers for remote management. The topics in this domain include configuring WinRM, configuring down-level service management, configuring servers for daily management tasks, configuring Server Core and Windows Firewall, and managing non-domain joined servers.

- Configure Hyper-V (25-30%)

In this domain, a candidate should have the capacity to create and configure virtual machine settings and storage, as well as virtual networks. They must have knowledge on dynamic memory, smart paging, Resource Metering, guest integration services, pass-through disks, checkpoints, MAC addresses, and more.

- Install and administer Active Directory (25-30%)

Candidates should have knowledge on the installation of domain controllers. They will be required to add or remove a domain controller, upgrade a domain controller, install Active Directory Domain Services, and other associated tasks.

Exam 70-411

- Deploy, manage, and maintain servers (20-25%)

Candidates must have the skills to monitor servers. Some of the topics covered in this domain are configuring data collector sets, configuring alerts, monitoring real-time performance, and configuring event subscriptions and network monitoring.

- Configure network services and access (20-25%)

Candidates must comprehend tasks associated with DirectAccess such as implementing server requirements and client configuration, as well as configuring DNS and certificates for DirectAccess.

- Configure a network policy server infrastructure (15-20%)

This domain focuses on Network Access Protection (NAP). Candidates require the skills to configure System Health Validators (SHVs) and NAP client settings, configure health policies, configure NAP enforcement using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and VPN, and configure isolation and remediation of non-compliant computers.

- Configure and manage Active Directory (20-25%)

Candidates must have skills related to moderating domain controllers and Active Directory. Some of the topics covered in this domain are installing a read-only domain controller, backing up Active Directory and SYSVOL, and performing Active Directory restore.

- Configure and manage Group Policy (20-25%)

The main skill candidates require for this exam is processing Group Policy. The must understand the configuration of processing order, blocking, enforced policies, security filtering, and other topics.

Exam 70-412

- Configure and manage high availability (20-25%)

The three skills a candidate requires for this domain are configuring failover clustering, managing failover clustering roles, and managing virtual machine movement. The topics cover configuring cluster networking and storage, configuring specific settings and preferences related to clustering, and performing live migration, quick migration, and storage migration.

- Configure file and storage solutions (15-20%)

Candidates must implement Dynamic Access Control (DAC). They must configure different claim types, implement policy changes, perform access-denied remediation, and work with Central Access rules and policies.

- Implement business continuity and disaster recovery (20-25%)

Candidates should be able to configure backups. This is an important domain so that an individual can sort things out after a crisis. They should configure Windows Server and Azure Backups, role-specific backups, and configure site-level tolerance.

- Configure network services (20-15%)

Candidates should understand IP Address Management (IPAM). They will have to perform IPAM either manually or with the Group Policy, configure server discovery and IPAM database storage, and manage IP blocks and ranges.

- Configure access and information protection solutions (15-20%)

Candidates will need to implement Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS). They should install AD FS, use claims-based authentication such as Relying Party Trusts, and configure authentication policies.
